Sleep apnea (or apnea) is a surprisingly common sleep disorder that is characterized by a person's respiration periodically terminating during sleep. It may happen dozens or hundreds of times during one night, when weak muscles that support the back of the neck allow the airways to block.
Obviously, the breathing signal is not transmitted from the brain to the membrane.
It is a treatable condition, with several options open to patients. The simplest and most common treatment is the use of a sleep apnea machine called a CPAP sleep apnea machine. (CPAP is an abbreviation for constant positive air pressure.)
Even though it is not directly life threatening, sleep apnea is a serious condition that has the potential to significantly affect a suffering quality of life.
In normal human sleep patterns, a person passes through five steps in sleep, eventually entering deep sleep. Deep sleep is when you dream and REM (fast eye movement) occurs and when most recovery functions happen. And you will return to almost the alert about every ninety minutes. Thus, people who wake up two or three times in one night actually get a good sleep.
In the case of sleep apnea, the suffering effectively falls unconscious in sleep, immediately before the brain roses the body in response to the blocked airway. Diagnosis for sleep apnea was complicated, demanded the specialist's attention and possibly a night or two in a sleep-lab. Fortunately, as awareness of this, any common condition becomes more widespread, so also has diagnosis and treatment options.
After consultation with a doctor, you can have a sleep apnea machine that monitors the vital signs of the body during sleep by means of simple device carried on your arm so that you can sleep in your own bed.
As you are probably more comfortable in known surroundings, and monitoring is in the same environment as you normally sleep, the results of such analysis may be more valuable to your sleep specialist or doctor.
If sleep apnea is diagnosed, a number of treatment options are available. The most basic, if applicable, is to lose weight, because obesity is a known cause of this condition. Unfortunately, this can only reduce the severity of the problem in many patients, and that's not the only reason.
In any emergency case further intervention is required. An alternative is surgery, but again, this will not work for everyone and is an expensive and undesirable option for many people.
This leaves the most common treatment, which is the use of a sleep apnea called CPAP. A CPAP sleeper machine (Constant Positive Airway Pressure) is a device that has a tube that is worn in the mouth during sleep which gives a slight positive pressure, but otherwise allows the wearer to breathe normally.
This means that the airway is always open during sleep, providing more restful, better sleep and better quality of life.
There are different models of CPAP machines available. Some offer more advanced features, such as a decrease in pressure during exhalation, so you do not breathe so much to the airflow.
Additionally, more advanced usage monitoring is available, upgradeable firmware options to keep the device current with the latest technology and the ability to link the sleep apnea machine to your computer.
Of course, cheaper, more basic models are available and can be completely autonomous, which requires a small additional configuration of the user.
